With the signing of the National Pact for a Colombia free of single-use plastics, the National Government is moving forward in compliance with Law 2232 of 2022 for the gradual reduction and substitution of these materials in the country, which generate heavy pollution in ecosystems and irreparable damage to biodiversity. A total of 14 categories of single-use plastic products will be gradually removed from the market, over a period of two to eight years, in order to initiate a conversion towards sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. The national government will support this process under the popular economy programs, so that “instead of being an economic problem, this becomes an economic opportunity”. In fact, in Colombia there are 375 Green Businesses dedicated to the transformation, management and use of plastics and other waste.
The first products to be removed from the market, starting in July 2024, for a period of two years will be:
Checkpoint bags used for packaging, loading or transporting packages and goods, except those reusable or for industrial use.
Bags used to pack newspapers, magazines, advertisements and invoices, as well as those used in laundries to pack washed clothes.
Rolls of empty bags in commercial surfaces for packing, loading or transporting packages and goods or carrying food in bulk, except for raw animal products.
Mixers and straws for drinks.
Plastic supports for inflation pumps.
Plastic cotton swab holders or flexible cotton-tipped swabs.
